Icy waters

I thought I was going to be smart and take pictures of the slow progress of the river icing over.   It did not go as planned.

Here is what it looked like a few days ago.

And the next day:

A few days later the river looks like this.  It floors me that people are walking across the river.  Of course, they are use to this.  I am going to wait a bit longer for that!

Trick or Treat

We just had trick or treating at our Kindergarten building.  Everyone lines up and walks through as the teachers pass out candy.  Big kids and little kids get in on the action.  Pretty nice way to do trick or treating.

The snow is here.

Having some "winter" fun in Alaska.

A little time away

A very cold boat ride to the airport.

Last weekend Jill and I took a trip to another village, Kwethluk, to observe in their school.  I found it very beneficial.  I even used some of the tips I picked up in my PE class this week.  This resulted in no problems during PE (also known as no FC).  Needless to say, I was happy about that.  On top of getting to observe we also got a chance to see another area and just get away for a little bit.

Happy to see some trees!

Qaspeqs are cool and now I know how to spell qaspeq!

Heather is not having it in her classroom.  Keep fighting the good fight!!

How would you like to have to climb over a big pipe to get to your house everyday?   That is just what Heather and Kristin (our other lovely hostess) have to do.  Look ma, no hands.

Jill is quite good and making sure she captures good pictures.

On land, sea, and air!

How to get from point A to point B?  Fly, that is how.  If I want to get anywhere around here you have to go by boat and then by plane.  I have to cross a river to get to the airport and then take a plane to where I need to go. Here a glimpse at how it is done.

The best way to beat the blues, dog sit!

Last week was a rough one.  I was sick on Wednesday and that meant a sub.  I worried that the kids were not going to behave for the sub and not get any work accomplished.  However, I was wrong.  For the most part, they did very well.  However, they seemed to save it all up for me when I returned.  We had a really rough day on Thursday and again on Friday.  Needless to say I was exhausted when the weekend came.  I was asked to dog sit for another teacher here and it couldn't have come at a better time.  I enjoyed having a cute dog around to cheer me up.

Although I was reminded of my students.  Neqa (the dog I was watching) is a very active dog.  On one of the walks we were on she decided to grab something off the boardwalk.  She had it in her mouth and I told her to drop it.  She gave me that look. The look I get from my students when they aren't having it.  I tried to take it out of her mouth and she continued to give me that look.  We spent about two minutes, going back and forth.  She continuing to look at me like no way lady and me giving her my best you better give me that now looks.  Finally I was able to pry it out of her mouth and drop it down a crack in the boardwalk.  She looked up at me like how dare you do that.  It didn't matter, I thoroughly enjoyed her company.

Google?

Sometimes being a teacher is very stressful and other times it is just entertaining.

My story of the day came when I entered another teacher's classroom.  This class was looking at computers.  I will repeat the story as it happened.  Names have been removed to protect the innocent and not so innocent.

Student: "Hey, its you"
Teacher: "Hello"
Student:  "I want to google"
Teacher: "What do you want to google?"
Student: "I want to google"
Teacher: "Yes, but what do you want to google?"
Student: "google"
Teacher: "You have to have something to google, what do you want to google"
Student:   "google"
Teacher: "You want to google, google"
 Student: (stares blankly at teacher)
Teacher: "ok then, google google"
Student:  (stares blankly at teacher and then looks away at the computer)
